How to sell on Instagram in Nigeria without losing orders in the DMs

Turning followers into orders: what to put in the bio link, how to price in the post, where DMs quietly leak sales, and how to stop running a shop out of an inbox.

Start here

Instagram sells the thing. It was never built to take the order.

For a huge number of Nigerian businesses the shop front is a grid and the counter is a DM. That part works: the photos do the selling, the comments do the marketing, and the customer is somewhere they already spend their evening.

The trouble starts at the order. A DM has no record of what was agreed, no stock behind it, and no way to take payment, so every sale becomes a conversation you personally have to finish. Below is how to keep the reach and stop the leak.

Where sales leak

Five places an Instagram order goes missing

None of these are about posting more. They are about what happens after someone is already interested.

  • "DM for price"

It doubles your work and halves your sales. The people who would have bought at the price now have to ask for it, and most will not. Put the price in the caption or on the page the link opens.

  • Requests buried under hearts

Real orders sit in the same inbox as compliments, spam and the message requests folder you check on Sundays. A separate ordering link takes the order out of the pile.

  • Sold-out items still on the grid

A post stays up forever. If the grid is your catalog, you will sell what you no longer have, and refunding an eager customer is the most expensive apology there is.

  • Stories that expire with the order in them

A customer who ordered from a story has no record to point at, and neither do you. Anything agreed in a story should be written back somewhere permanent.

  • Payment by screenshot

Account number in the DM, screenshot back, and now someone has to check the alert before packing. That step is where the fraud happens and where the delay lives.

The setup

Four things to fix this week

In order of what they return for the effort.

  1. Make the bio link go somewhere that can take an order

Not a list of links, and not your WhatsApp with nothing behind it. A page with your items, prices and what is in stock, that can take payment. That link is the only piece of Instagram real estate you fully control.

  2. Put the price and the link in the caption

Every post that sells something should carry the price and a route to buy. The caption is where an interested person decides, and sending them hunting is where you lose them.

  3. Move the conversation to WhatsApp, deliberately

Instagram is for reach, WhatsApp is for conversation. A single line, order here or message us on WhatsApp, does more than any reply template. Just make sure what arrives there is an order and not another question about price.

  4. Keep one stock list behind all of it

The grid, the link, the chat and the shop have to read the same numbers. This is the whole difference between a business and a very busy inbox.

What changes

The same followers, more finished sales

  • Someone likes a post

    Today
They DM to ask the price
    With TAB
They see it and tap the link

Interest is a perishable thing. Every extra step between wanting it and paying loses some of it.

  • The order arrives

    Today
A conversation you have to finish
    With TAB
A record with items and a total

The order should exist without you having to be awake.

  • Taking payment

    Today
    Account number, then a screenshot
    With TAB
Card or transfer on the page

A payment attached to the order removes the checking, and the checking is what makes you slow.

  • Restocking

    Today
    Scroll the DMs and count
    With TAB
    The sales say what moved

What sold out fastest is the most useful thing Instagram can tell you, and the inbox cannot.

Be honest about the limits

None of this replaces the posting

The reach still comes from good photographs, showing your face, replying to comments and posting when your customers are awake. No tool substitutes for that, and any tool that says it does is selling a shortcut that does not exist.

What a system does is stop you losing the sales you already earned. That is a smaller claim and a more useful one.

Where TAB fits

One mention, then you can go

TAB gives you a storefront on your own link, which is the thing to put in the bio: your items, your prices, stock that hides itself when it runs out, and card or bank transfer taken on the page. The same catalog sits behind your WhatsApp ordering link, so a customer who came from the grid and a customer who came from the chat draw on one stock record.

Questions we get

The ones worth answering plainly

How do I sell on Instagram in Nigeria?
Post the item with the price in the caption, put a link in your bio that opens a page where the customer can order and pay, and keep one stock list behind that page so the grid never sells something you no longer have. Use DMs for questions, not for taking orders.
What should I put in my Instagram bio link?
A page that can take an order: your items with prices, what is in stock, and a way to pay by card or bank transfer. A link tree of other links adds a step without adding a sale.
Should I sell in DMs or move customers to WhatsApp?
Move them, but give them somewhere to land. WhatsApp keeps the conversation in one place and is easier to search than a request folder. The mistake is moving them to a chat that still cannot show prices or take payment.
How do I stop selling items I have run out of?
Stop treating the grid as the catalog. Old posts stay up forever, so the stock has to live somewhere that counts down as you sell, with sold-out items hidden on the page the link opens.
Can I take payment on Instagram in Nigeria?
Not inside the app itself. You send the customer to a page or a chat where the payment happens. The closer that page sits to the order, the fewer transfers you have to chase afterwards.

Think TAB might help?

Tell us what you run and we will say plainly whether it fits, including when it does not.
